Could the Recent Pacific Megaquakes Trigger a West Coast Temblor?


In the past 15 months several devastating earthquakes have rumbled beneath the Pacific. In February 2010 a magnitude 8.8 temblor slammed central Chile; this past September a magnitude 7 quake walloped Christchurch, New Zealand, leading to a magnitude 6.3 aftershock this past February. The magnitude 9 megaquake that devastated Japan March 11 was the fifth largest in the last 110 years.
Some may wonder if these quakes are linked. A high-magnitude earthquake in Japan, one notion goes, might redistributestress in Earth's crust, subsequently triggering another temblor in the following months or years—a quake that could even strike as far away as the western shores of the U.S. But the apparent clustering of major seismic events that take place thousands of kilometers apart is probably coincidental. That the Japanese and Chilean megaquakes occurred only 13 months apart is a statistical fluke, the chance alignment of two independent events. "Over great distances, the chances of stress transfer triggering a major quake are low if not nonexistent," says Chris Goldfinger, a marine geologist at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
Even though the recent Japanese temblor has not boosted seismic risk along the U.S. west coast, that doesn't mean residents there can rest easy. The best gauge of quake risk in the northeastern Pacific is the region's seismic history. Whereas scientific instruments designed to document quakes have been around barely more than a century, the interval between major quakes is much longer than that. Thus, scientists turn to the geologic record to determine the recurrence interval of ancient quakes by carbon-dating organic material in sheets of tsunami debris washed far inland or in the layered remnants of submarine landslides smothering the floors of undersea canyons.
The most hazardous swath of the northeastern Pacific lies along the Cascadia subduction zone (CSZ), a tectonic interface that parallels the coast and poses a seismic threat to cities such as Victoria, British Columbia; Portland, Ore.; and Eureka, Calif. At that subduction zone, the tiny Juan de Fuca plate slides eastward beneath the massive North American plate between 30 and 40 millimeters each year—an interface that, with minor exceptions, has apparently been locked for centuries. "This subduction zone stands out as the big elephant in the corner," Goldfinger says. "It sits quiet for hundreds of years, and then goes off all at once."
The last megaquake to strike this region, one estimated to have been a magnitude 9 or greater, occurred the evening of January 26, 1700. According to new analyses by Goldfinger and his colleagues, soon to be published in a U.S. Geological Survey report, that quake is just one of 19 such quakes to have slammed the region in the past 10,000 years. In the same interval at least 20 other temblors measuring between magnitudes 8 and 9 have occurred.
The big question is, when will the next "Big One" hit? "It's going to happen," Goldfinger says. "It's just a matter of narrowing down the timeline."
The team's new data suggest that the northern portion of the CSZ, which stretches from the middle of Vancouver Island to the Washington State–Oregon border, has a 10 to 15 percent chance of suffering a magnitude 8 or greater quake in the next 50 years. But the southern portion of the zone, stretching from the same border to California's Cape Mendocino, has higher risk, as much as a 37 percent chance of the same magnitude temblor over that same interval.
Although most people may consider southern California to be the most quake-prone region in the nation, Goldfinger says that the CSZ is arguably the biggest seismic hazard in the U.S. "We've got a long way to go to get that into the national consciousness," he notes.

Rare perspective: Stereoscopic, color views of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake


The Smithsonian National Museum of American History recently discovered these images, the first 3-D, color stereoscopic photographs of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. Photographer Frederick Eugene Ives took the color images, known as kromograms, six months after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the city on April 18, 1906. The top pair of images show the Flood Building on Market Street. The bottom pair is a view of a street near City Hall, looking northeast.

Shannon Perich, associate curator of the museum’s photographic history collection, says Ives patented his color method in the early 1890s and explains that seeing the images in 3-D requires a step-shaped viewer called a Kromscope. You could try getting a feel for the three dimensionality by sitting from your computer at a comfortable distance and letting your eyes relax until you see a double image; then try to merge the left-right images together. Motorola Developing own OS? [SILLY RUMOR]


Motorola is working on their own OS? What? Back that up. Several blogs are putting forth the rumor that Motorola’s friendship with Google is waning and that the cellphone manufacturer has been quietly hiring Apple and Adobe engineers with the aim of developing their own platform OS to compete with Android. The thinking is that Google is “shooting itself win the foot” with fragmentation problems, manufacturer support issues, and market saturation of so many Android phones, you can’t tell one from the other. Can this rumor really be credible?
We don’t think so.
Now, the fact that Motorola is hiring people from Apple and Adobe is interesting. It’s really easy to see some strange Frankenstein-esque OS that’s as elegant as the iPhone but can freakishly and natively play Flash. And it’s easy to see how there are so many different Android products in the market that it becomes really different to tell one from the other in terms of performance. But creating a new OS to go up against two very seasoned platforms with vast app catalogs is extremely risky. Particularly when Motorola has been doing quite well with products like the Droid and Xoom thanks to the Android Platform.
Motorola may also be thinking of the next generation OS, years down the road when everything is linked to cloud. Sure, that could be. And with Google’s CR46 project, HPs webOS, it seems that everyone has their heads in the clouds. So why not Motorola as well? But seriously, we don’t think Motorola is going to kill the goose that laid the golden egg. Not by a long shot.

The Origin of Life: Scientific American Podcast

How did life start on Earth? Science still has no definitive answer. But in the 1950s, a pair of chemists mixed a stew of poisonous gases, like you'd find at a volcano. They zapped it with electricity, mimicking lightning. And they found that they'd created a few amino acids. All life on Earth relies on these compounds to make proteins.


In 2007 researchers at Scripps Institute of Oceanography found sealed samples from those half-century old experiments. They re-examined the contents with today's better equipment, like liquid chromatography and mass spectrometers. And found that the electrified volcano's breath produced 23 different amino acids. The work appears on-line in the early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.


The finding could mean that various building blocks of life were common in pools of water on the surface of the early Earth. What's more, the amino acids are similar to those found on certain types of meteorites. Which suggests that the basic constituents of life could be widespread in the universe.


But how those oases of amino acids started to come together and form life? Well, the origin of life as we know it remains a mystery."

Apple iOS 4.3.1 Fixes Graphics Glitches, Mobile Connections

Apple released a minor security and maintenance update for its iOS devices a few days earlier than expected to fix mobile connections, graphics and Apple TV bugs.



Apple's iOS 4.3.1 update, issued March 25, included a handful of security and maintenance fixes for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.. The update comes as Apple prepares to roll out the iPad 2 to 25 additional countries.


Within hours, a jailbreak was available, according to Ultras Now, a jailbreak site.
The latest update covers the iPhone 4, third and fourth-generation iPod Touch, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, and the regular iPad, according to Apple. The update is available for AT&T’s GMS-based iPhone, but not for Verizon’s CDMA phones.


Verizon customers are still on iOS 4.2.6, which was released in January.
Apple has resolved bugs related to activating and connecting to some cellular networks and addressed authentication issues with some enterprise Web services, according to its release notes. The maintenance release fixes image flicker that may be present when using the Apple Digital AV Adapter with some TVs. The update also fixes various occasional graphics glitches on the fourth-generation iPod Touch.


In the release notes, there is no mention of battery issues that some iOS 4.3. users complained about, nor does it mention whether the security hole Charlie Miller exploited to win the recent Pwn2Own hacking contest at CanSecWest have been closed. The issues may still be open or may be covered under “general bug fixes.”
Miller reported on Twitter that the Mac OS X vulnerability he found for Pwn2Own was fixed in the 10.6.7 update. With iOS 4.3.1, he has yet to comment on whether his bug has been fixed or not..
The jailbreak is a “tethered jailbreak” and is available currently for the iPad and iPhone 4. Other versions are expected soon. The user will have to use PwnageTool 4.2, Universal Ramdisk Fixer and tethered boot utility to build a custom firmware image and then restart the phone in “DFU” to run the boot utility before using iTunes to install the jailbreak, according to detailed instructions available online.
DFU mode, or Device Firmware Upgrade mode, is a state that you can put your iOS device into which allows a jailbroken device to to interface with iTunes, but does not load the iPhone operating system. A tethered jailbreak means the device has to be loaded into DFU mode every time it reboots.
Users with jailbroken devices should not download the official 4.3.1 download, as it will make them lose the jailbreak, according to a Twitter post by an iPhone hacker who writes for the Dev-Team blog. He also said iPad 2 jailbreakers should wait, but he didn’t think Apple had fixed the iPad 2 jailbreak, either.
The iOS 4.3.1 release was expected within two weeks, Boy Genius Report, a site that focuses on communications and consumer electronics, said on March 21. Based on that rumor, this release landed a little sooner than expected.


Apple also released a minor update for Xcode, with version 4.0.1. The latest code fixes bugs prevented indexing of some projects, related to nil settings in the Core Data model editor, prevented automatic download of iOS documentations, and made the “Install SCode.app” to hang at 99 percent complete. There were additional bug fixes to the compiler for iOS projects and stability improvements made.
